Nuclear Sector
ESR Technology has 50 years of nuclear-based heritage. Its key capabilities and disciplines were first developed when the UK Atomic Energy Authority engaged in non-nuclear R&D, aligned with the industrial needs at the time. Some examples of these innovative transfers that later came together as ESR Technology are;
- Tribology, the science and engineering of friction, lubrication and wear, applies to all moving parts, not just in the hostile nuclear environment. A National Centre for Tribology (NCT) was established at Risley to support other industries whose machinery had to work in demanding applications. Eight years later, a European Space Tribology Laboratory (ESTL) was created with the support of the European Space Agency, to ensure ‘good tribology’ was being applied to all mechanisms developed by Europe’s growing space industry.
- Asset life management is vitally important to every operator of large and expensive plant. Drawing from its experience in the nuclear sector, AEA Technology developed its non-destructive testing (NDT) research base to form the ‘HOIS’ Joint Industry Project, to improve the effectiveness of in-service inspection for the Oil and Gas industry.
- Following the tragic Piper Alpha platform fire in the North Sea, The UK Health and Safety Executive would only allow oil production to continue if companies produced new safety documentation. AEA Technology took the initiative to provide consultancy services to major oil companies, resulting in one of the world’s leading consultancies in oil rig safety.
Today, ESR Technology is an independent SME that can apply other industry’s best practices and innovations in Tribology, NDT and Safety back to the Nuclear sector. These include:
- Industrial Tribology
- Materials Engineering
- Design, Analysis, Assembly and Test
- Space & Vacuum Tribology
- Safety & Risk Management
- Non-Destructive Test
- Training
