Key HOIS themes
Two key HOIS themes are:
- Non intrusive inspection
- The industry standard for NII of pressure vessels, DNV RP GL G103, was originally developed by HOIS in 2008, revised in 2011. A recent HOIS project is significantly updating it, and will launch HOIS-RP-103 in 2020, to replace all earlier versions of the document.
- Substantial benefits from performing non intrusive inspection (NII) instead of conventional intrusive visual inspection of pressure vessels:
- Safety - up to 80% fewer confined space entries with corresponding reduction in the number of line breaks and sunsequent leak tests.
- Financial - increased production and lower maintenance costs, the OGTC figure from December 2017 suggests that NII could deliver up to £242 million of savings per year to the UK continental shelf alone (https://theogtc.com/media/2002/ogtc-and-abb-non-intrusive-inspection-survey.pdf)
- Corrosion under insulation (CUI) and external corrosion.
- Significant challenge for the Oil and Gas industry
- CUI has caused ruptures and fires leading to damage costing 10s of millions of pounds on single assets
- Estimated that 60% of piping failures are due to CUI
